Drink your greens!

If you are trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle in the new year, one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat more fruits & vegetables.  And the easiest way I know to do that is to drink them in a Green Smoothie!

Sip your way to a healthier breakfast by blending your produce each morning. Green Smoothies will get your day started off right by packing in nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, plus protein-filled yogurt and milk for an energy boost that will keep you going until lunch.

But what exactly is a Green Smoothie?  Green Smoothies are simply, leafy greens, like spinach or kale, blended with fruit, and a liquid of choice, usually nut milk or water.

If you think that drinking a glassful of pulverized greens sounds terrible, I swear to you that you cannot taste them! By adding just enough fruit to those nutrient rich greens, you can make a delicious smoothie that will fuel your body the right way!

But why should you add green smoothies to your diet? Green Smoothies fill your body with vitamins A and C, potassium, calcium & fiber – which fill you up, stabilize your blood sugar levels, and energize your body naturally, and taste great!  If you don’t believe me, try my favorite Green Smoothie recipe below!

Ingredients

  • 12 oz. nut milk – almond, coconut or cashew milk

  • 2 handfuls – fresh spinach leaves

  • 1 frozen banana – roughly chopped

  • 1 handful frozen pineapple chunks

  • 2 tablespoons nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew)

  • 3 oz. vanilla yogurt (dairy or non-dairy)

Directions

  • Add the ingredients to the blender in the order listed above.
  • Blend milk and greens together briefly BEFORE adding frozen fruit, etc. Then, blend again until smooth.
  • Add more goodness by garnishing with extra granola, fruit, seeds or nuts!

Notes

  • Smoothies can separate within a few hours in the fridge, so mix everything up when you’re ready to drink.

Green Smoothie Tips:

  • Freeze your bananas! Once they are ripe, slice into bite size pieces, place in a single layer in a zip top bag, and keep in the freezer for later.
  • 1 cup of spinach = a big handful – no need to measure precisely!
  • First, add liquids to the blender, then greens.  Blend those together briefly BEFORE adding frozen fruit, etc.  Then blend again!
  • Clean that blender right away – makes it so much easier! Rinse out, add ½ cup of warm water & a squirt of dish detergent, and Pulse in a blender 4-5 times, then rinse!
